  • 2013 - 2015 Director of the Professional Doctoral Program, School of Information Studies. Syracuse University. Directed and managed this program during a period of transition. Transform this program into a more sustainable operation and realigned to the needs of students and the current strategic objectives of the school.
  • 2009- 2010 Senior IT Consultant, Acting CIO and Visiting Professor. Singapore Management University (SMU). While on leave from Syracuse University, served as Acting CIO and senior consultant at SMU to strategically re-align the university’s IT organizations and services. Developed a plan to upgrade the network, key systems, and overall enterprise architecture. 2004 - 2008 Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer. Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York. Served as the senior administrator responsible for campus-wide information systems and managed the University’s strategic and tactical information responses to changing campus needs.
    • • Directed a staff of 225 and managed a budget of over $22 million.
    • • Established and led the university-wide Technology Leadership Committee (TLC). The TLC’s mission is to collaboratively evaluate and deploy technologies that can advance the teaching, learning, and administration objectives of the University. The net result of the TLC will be the cost-effective deployment and support of new technologies through resource sharing, shared knowledge and research on emerging technologies.
    • • Developed a Network Master Plan for upgrading the University’s aging network. Using a new creative funding model for this $31million plan enabled the completion of the project within five years and made the network financially sustainable into the future.
    • • Improved the management efficiency and effectiveness of administrative systems with a new operational support structure. This new structure aligned administrative systems more closely and directly with the strategic directions of all Vice Presidents. The goal was to reduce the time needed to enhance administrative systems and the cost of their support.
    • • Initiated, secured funding, and helped design a new data center for the University that is one of the “greenest” data centers in the world and one of the first of its kind.
  • 1997-2004 Vice Provost for Information Services and Dean of University Libraries. University of Rhode Island. Kingston, Rhode Island. Served as Chief Information Officer and held the rank of tenured full professor in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Responsible for all aspects of information technology and information services—library services, computer services, voice and data networking, instructional technology services, distance learning technologies, and institutional research.
    • • Directed a staff of 170 and managed a budget of over $17 million. • Developed and managed a $29 million capital project that upgraded the University’s technology infrastructure.
    • • Implemented an administrative enterprise software system (PeopleSoft). • Generated strategic and operating plans that improved organizational focus and functions.
    • • Developed and chaired the Information Resource Council, a university-wide representative committee that functioned as an advisory council on information policy, standards, services, and the allocation of resources.
    • • Represented the university on all state and regional library and technology organizations.
    • • Raised over a half million dollars in corporate gifts for technology initiatives.
  • 1995-97 Associate Provost for Information and Instructional Technology. Ohio University, Athens, Ohio. Served as Chief Information Officer (CIO) for Ohio University and was responsible for all aspects of the information technology and communications infrastructure. Responsibilities included: computer services, voice and data networking, instructional media services, distance learning technologies, and the University’s public radio and television stations.
    • • Managed a staff of over 165 and a budget of over $15 million. • Developed and implemented a comprehensive, cost-effective plan to update and expand the campus data network.
    • • Improved the functionality and effectiveness of administrative services, including web-enabling many key student services functions.
    • • Designed and implemented a new two-way interactive video network linking all five regional campuses to the main Athens campus.
    • • Created and led a re-engineering effort that consolidated service points and reduced costs.
    • • Initiated a redesign of the university Web site to improve usability and marketing effectiveness.

  • 1992-95 Senior Director of Academic Computing. University of North Texas. Denton, Texas. Responsible for managing Academic Computing and setting its strategic directions. Academic Computing provided a wide variety of computing systems and services to faculty and more than 26,000 graduate and undergraduate students. Chaired the University Service Advantage Committee. Held an academic appointment as Associate Professor of Information Science.
  • 1988-92 Supervisor. Computing Technology Group. AT&T Bell Laboratories. Holmdel, New Jersey. Managed the computing systems of the Quality Process Center. Managed a large VAX clustered computer system, an extensive SUN workstation network, networked PC's and Macs, and a digital communications switch. Directed the Center's software testing laboratory. Administered an annual budget of over $2 million, developed technical documentation for users, interfaced with all eight departments in the Center, and planned for future growth and development of the computing environment. Participated in research on software engineering, information networks, and cooperative computing environments.
